I thought Episode 4 was pretty good, but spent way too much time on the "parallel narrative", which went on for too long and really tested my patience. It's probably a matter of where your priorities lie. I personally prefer the second half myself. I heard from several people who shared this opinion. Just my opinion though, definitely give it a try. Episode 5-6 however, it seems to have taken a nose dive in quality and is becoming increasingly boring. It started out alright with episodes 1-3 getting better each episode, then episode 4 was iffy but had some really good parts. I have come too far to not finish it, but overall it has been pretty "meh" to me. but I am currently on episode 6 of Umineko and to be honest. Originally posted by ☠Black Knight:Honestly it depends. When I went into Higurashi, I was very surprised by how "straight" it played, since I was expecting a lot of weirdness. Probably best not to go in with any expectation (whether you think it's fantasy, mystery, horror, etc). Suffice to say, take very little at face value. Plus it seems that Umineko has much more fantasy elements from what I'm seeing? Thank you for your answer! I am much more invested in the fate of all the characters and I found the ending to be a lot more fitting. If you like mystery novels at all, you should be throwing your wallet at the screen for this one. They are truly to be commended, and the 24.95 price tag is ridiculously reasonable. The themes resonate better for me and I enjoy how audacious it often gets. This story is extremely well written and the team at MangaGamer did a simply fantastic job of translating and editing. I personally prefer Umineko, but that's just me. Certain things might be left too open to interpretation, and not everyone's going to appreciate that. It is a combination of dozen of different genres and themes and is highly avant-garde, so your millage may vary. It has a simpler premise and it handles that very well. I will say that Higurashi is narratively "cleaner". They do share the general structure, certain sensibilities and maybe some of the themes.
